The CFO as Data Chief

By Telmo Silva on May 25, 2016

Over the last few years, the job of CFO has grown to encompass far more than what it was in decades past. Then, a CFO’s job was fairly limited to raising shareholder value and overseeing fiscal responsibility, two necessary tasks to keep the ship afloat. But as the digital evolution is changing everything, CFOs are not immune. In today’s world, an effective CFO will also be increasingly responsible for helping to expand growth of the company over time. That means they need to give focused attention on the company’s ever-increasing data and mine it for strategic insights and better decision-making that lead to new avenues for growth.

Whether they like it or not, their unique position in the company makes them uniquely qualified to do so. They can identify the data that will generate the most valuable insights and the ones that are uniquely relevant to actual business goals.

One of the primary concerns that CFOs will want to manage to include ensuring that the data that they are viewing, analyzing, and gleaning from is accurate, timely, and clean data. Bad data can skew reports, misrepresent trends, and degrade the performance of any decisions based upon its outcomes. The months or even years spent collecting data can come to naught if a few bad apples spoil the sweetness of the whole bunch. Data must be cleaned in order to meaningful.

Most data errors arise from the vulnerabilities inherent in manually-collecting data. But there are solutions and means to minimize the typos, human error, inconsistent field names, and so forth that are inevitable. Use pre-check systems and documented procedures to minimize errors and maximize consistency. Improve communication among departments to ensure that the data supplied matches the needs of the internal customer. Move quality-checks upstream to minimize the occurrence of fallbacks. And finally, try empowering as many stakeholders as possible to be accountable for the overall accuracy and flow of data within each department.
