Back On Black: Making Dashboards And Reports Stand Out

The trend is back on black for dashboards and reports. White is very common and the problem is that our brains associate white with no information. As a result, it can cause people to scan beyond what’s actually there and miss out on a lot of content. Black backgrounds are gaining in popularity, but there are a few tips to ensure it is done properly.

Choose the Right Font
The font is everything on a black background. It should be one that is thick and crisp. Some of the cool modern fonts can make it stand out amongst the black background to catch people’s attention and ensure that everything is legible.

Work with Limited Colors
Too many colors can be difficult to work with and therefore it’s suggested that you choose three or four colors at the maximum. The brighter, the better. It is also a good idea to look at the default font colors for ‘hover over’ features as black is often the default and therefore the information may not be readable.

Add Excitement
Black backgrounds are becoming more common, but the eyes still need time to adapt to the changes. Make the entire dashboard as exciting as possible, complete with fonts, colors, and borders. It’s always a good idea to try a few different looks to see what works. It may even be necessary to do some A/B testing as a way of getting feedback from others.

Feel free to use those tips the next time you create a dashboard on ClicData!
