Dashboards are often focused on providing key metrics for upper-level management to keep a finger on the pulse of the performance of the business activities. But dashboards can be used to further advantage as a collaborative tool as well. There are times throughout the day or week that teams can benefit from reviewing project progress or customer responses. During team meetings, whiteboards, at board meetings, or even distribution of management, emails can be an opportune time to share results, review indicators, and identify strengths and weaknesses in processes.

If your dashboard allows collaboration, it can enhance teamwork, shorten the time to correct weaknesses or problems in performance, and simply increase personal investment by stakeholders. Knowledge is power, so when a team member discovers an interesting insight or data point on their company’s dashboard, their ability to easily forward it on to others on the team or to management can speed the response to it.

But that’s not all. Dashboards are at their best when they are designed to literally “push” metrics to end-users, sending them directly to those stakeholders that can benefit from seeing them. There can be a variety of ways to trigger when and who the data is sent to, including threshold, capacity and timing. Optimal dashboards allow for setting up automatic alerts and notifications when performance reaches the benchmarks that are being monitored.

When it comes to the potential of dashboards to inform and guide businesses to operate smarter and more efficiently, consider sharing the spoils with your teams and multiply the benefits.
